Nitrous oxide, N2O

Nitrous oxide, N2O

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)  is a unique gas whose pain-relieving, euphoria-inducing and combustion-promoting properties make it versatile in medicine, the food industry and motorsport. It combines chemical reactivity and biological activity in a way that allows it to be used for both anaesthesia and power boosting. Its ability to release oxygen as it decomposes makes it a special gas that serves both human well-being and technical performance.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a colourless, non-toxic, sweet-smelling gas, known for its mildly narcotic effects. It is heavier than air and in high concentrations can displace oxygen, creating a suffocating environment. Chemically, it is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen which is non-flammable and stable at room temperature. Its use requires careful handling because, although it does not burn spontaneously, it can contribute to the combustion of other substances.

The chemical symbol for nitrous oxide is N₂O
