Different gases are part of our daily lives every day. We live surrounded by gases, but rarely stop to think about their role.

The very air we breathe is a mixture of gases that makes our lives possible. Gases make everyday life possible, in industry they can be a raw material, part of a process or packaging, and in hospitals they are vital for patient care. Although often invisible, gases play a huge role, both in households and in industry.

The role of gases in our daily lives

Let’s say you are about to go shopping for groceries in the car. Your car airbag protects you in case of an accident, as in the event of a collision, a signal from the acceleration sensor triggers the car airbag to inflate. The charge is a gas mixture of nitrogen and helium. The gas mixture inflates the airbag in a fraction of a second.

You come home from the store and open the front door, which has glass. The argon between the insulating glass in the windows insulates heat and keeps out frost. When you’re looking for ideas for cooking, you turn to an electronic appliance. A wide range of gases are also needed to make electronic equipment. The vegetables you buy in the shop can grow up to 40% faster with the carbon dioxide used in greenhouses.

You pick up your shopping and start cooking. You notice that the food is packed in a protective gas. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen are used as protective gases for food. They reduce microbial growth and preserve the original quality of the product without artificial additives or preservatives. Extending the shelf life of food makes people’s daily lives easier and reduces food waste.

As the cooking progresses, it’s time to heat up the barbecue. And it’s really quick when you’ve got a LPG-powered barbecue. As you set the table, you bring out the soft drinks. The soft drink and brewing industries use carbon dioxide to carbonate a variety of beverages.
