Identification of gas cylinders

How to identify gas cylinders

Woikoski cylinders are identified by the stampings, labels and colours on the neck. The identification markings on the cylinders are based on different regulations.

Stamping or punching of a gas cylinder

The main means of identification of a cylinder is a fixed stamp, or punch, on the neck. The name of the gas it contains is always marked on the shoulder of the cylinder. The stamps also provide information about the cylinder’s inspection, manufacturer, weight, pressure and volume. All stamps are made in accordance with SFS-EN 13769.

Gas cylinder colouring

The colouring of the gas cylinders at Woikoski is implemented in accordance with EN 1089-3. According to the standard, the cylinders are graphite grey for industrial gases and white for medical gases (except acetylene and LPG).

Colouring of the shoulder of gas cylinders

The shoulder of the cylinder indicates the type of gas in the cylinder. Some gases have a specific colour code:

  • Argon – green
  • Acetylene – reddish brown
  • Oxygen – white
  • Helium – brown
  • Carbon dioxide – grey
  • Natural gas – blue
  • Nitrogen – black

If the gas does not have its own identification colour, the colour of the shoulder indicates the properties of the gas: blue-oxidising, green-inert, yellow-toxic, red-flammable.

In the case of mixed gases, the neck section may have more than one colour depending on the gases. If the gases have the same concentration, stamping and painting are carried out in a predetermined sequence. A neck ring may be used as an additional identifier (e.g. gas purity, special application area, etc.).

Gas cylinder labels

The most important label for gas identification is the so-called wing label. It contains the name of the gas, the trade name, if any, the composition (in mixtures), safety instructions, classification markings and the contact details of the gas supplier. The base colour of the wing label is white for medical gases, yellow for industrial gases and green for food gases. The information content of the wing label is based on the SFS-EN ISO 7225 standard.
