Specialty gases – the ultimate in purity and precision
Specialty gases are exceptionally pure gases or carefully prepared special mixtures that meet the most demanding technical and analytical needs. Their manufacture differs from ordinary industrial and welding gases in terms of purity, precision and composition.
Woikoski produces special pure gases and customized special alloys in-house. In addition, we have partners through whom we supply gases that we do not produce ourselves.
Gas purity classes – what does the N number mean?
When even the smallest contaminants can affect the final result, specially purified gases are needed. The purity of gases is commonly expressed as Nxx/x.x, for example N46 / 4.6. This notation indicates the number of nines in the percentage purity of the gas before the last digit. For example: N46 / 4.6 means 99.996% purity, i.e. four digits of 9 followed by 6. The higher the N number, the purer the gas – and the fewer the impurities.
Typical purity classes and levels of impurities
| The N-figure | Total content | Contaminants |
| N26 / 2.6 | 99,6 % | 0,4 % |
| N35 / 3.5 | 99,95 % | 500 ppm |
| N45 / 4.5 | 99,995 % | 50 ppm |
| N50 / 5.0 | 99,999 % | 10 ppm |
| N55 / 5.5 | 99,9995 % | 5 ppm |
| N60 / 6.0 | 99,9999 % | 1 ppm |
1 % = 10 000 ppm (parts per million)
Ultra-pure BIP gases
The BIP (Built-In Purifier) gases we supply are designed to replace N60 and cleaner gas grades. Their exceptional purity makes them unique in the world.
Why is BIP gas better?
- Oxygen content up to 10 times lower than in N60 gases
- Moisture content is up to 25 times lower
These provide a significant advantage, as oxygen and moisture are the most common and damaging contaminants in many applications.
The core of BIP technology
The BIP gas cylinder has a built-in purifier that physico-chemically improves the purity of the gas. The result is a reliable ultra-pure quality that eliminates the need for external purifiers. BIP gases have proven excellent in applications such as chromatography and welding of special alloy steels, where excellent welding results require extremely low oxygen levels.
We have BIP and BIP+ gases available in 50 litre and 10 litre bottles. Available BIP gases are Nitrogen, Helium, Argon and Hydrogen.
